File No. 812.00/9621

The American Ambassador to Italy to the Secretary of State.

[Telegram—Paraphrase.]

Department’s October 24, 6 p.m. I have just received a note from the Government stating that Italy, being also on this occasion desirous of showing good will to the United States, proposes to exchange [Page 857] views with our Government before adopting a definite line of action regarding the situation that might be created by the election of a permanent President of Mexico; the note adds that the Government of the United States should not ignore the circumstance that the Italian Government, since July 16, has officially recognized General Huerta as temporary President of the Mexican Republic.
