File No. 312.93/61.
Vice Consul Simpich to the Secretary of State.
Nogales, February 24, 1914.
Following received from Agent, Cananea, to-day:
Manifestation against all foreigners in general but particularly against Chinese, now in progress in Cananea being agitated by President Womans Union. Manifestation commenced at 12.15 is still on. At 1 p.m. great crowds in front of my office, woman speaker calling for forcible expulsion of Chinese from Cananea and threaten to undertake to act herself requesting crowds to back her up. I have made formal protest to Mayor but I don’t believe local authorities capable of preventing continuance of manifestation. If continues there may be serious trouble.
Montague.
Later Montague telephoned through American postmaster at Naco, Arizona, that mob was driving Chinese from streets and had also [Page 898] dispersed police. Montague telegraphed Governor at Hermosillo asking for troops to restore order. I am repeating Montague’s request to Governor and leaving this evening for Cananea.
