Excellency: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Embassy’s note of May 27th, in which it is requested that the American naval vessels in Mexican west coast waters be directed to assume the protection of German interests during the absence of H. M. S. Nümberg.

In reply I have the honor to inform your excellency that the Secretary of the Navy informed this Department in a letter under date of May 29, 1914, that the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet has been given instructions in the sense above indicated.
