The Brazilian Minister to the Secretary of State.

[Telegram.]

As my friend the Brazilian Ambassador told you yesterday, I am desirous of taking a vacation; but I want to add that I am only willing to do so without embarrassing the Government of the United States and in full and friendly accordance with you in the case that the Department can arrange to intrust American interests to an American and not give them to any other foreign legation here. But on account of the new prospects of an early settlement of things here according to to-day’s news, I suggest that you only study the case for the moment, not taking any steps before hearing from me again.
