File No. 493.11/490.

The Secretary of State to Minister Reinsch.

[Telegram.]

Treasury Department reports that Chinese Government paid in January last in round numbers $90,000 on account of the January 1914 quota of the Boxer Indemnity, which payment was made before reverting to the 1909 method of effecting payments and remissions at Shanghai. The amount to be retained by the United States being about $45,000, there remains about an equal sum to be refunded to China.

You will inquire of the Foreign Office whether this Government is to pay the remitted portion to the Chinese Legation here, as was done on January 31 last, for the support of indemnity students in the United States.
