File No. 812.00/11522.
The Secretary of State to Chargé O’Shaughnessy.
Washington, April 16, 1914, 1 p.m.
752. The President is gratified to learn from your telegram No. 856, April 15, 9 p.m., that General Huerta is disposed to bring this unfortunate incident to a close by complying with Admiral Mayo’s demand. He felt sure that this would be the result when the General understood the situation. If you will examine Mayo’s demand you will see that it states that the salute will be returned. This I may add is the invariable custom, from which the Government would not of course depart. Now that Admiral Mayo’s demand is to be acceded to, the sooner it is done the better and I suggest that General Huerta take the matter up at once through the proper channels.
