File No. 312.93/62.
Vice Consul Simpich to the Secretary of State.
Situation in Canaea temporarily relieved, soldiers having been allowed and order restored, though feeling against Chinese is still intense. On 24th one Chinese laundry was looted and two Chinese stoned and slightly injured by mob. Governor Maytorena, in reply to Consular Agent Montague’s demand has telegraphed assurances that orders have been given to Cananea authorities for the protection of foreign lives and property but the attitude of the municipal officials towards Chinese in particular is such that full dependence could not be placed in their promises should the situation become critical.
