File No. 312.52/266.
The Secretary of State to Consul General Hanna.
Washington, May 11, 1914.
Information reaches the Department through the Spanish Ambassador that Constitutionalists at Monterey are using the home of [Page 811] sisters of Joaquin Armendaiz, with the furniture. The Spanish Ambassador states that he will be pleased to have you take charge of the homes and office building of the Joaquin Armendaiz estate. If the above is true this Department would not object to your taking charge unofficially of this Spanish subject’s home arid office building, provided you think this can be done without hampering the work of your Consulate or lessening the good understanding existing between you and the authorities. You are given full discretion in the matter.
