Silliman is still at Saltillo under arrest. Marchani, his clerk, left this morning for Vera Cruz. Other Americans from Saltillo leave to-morrow morning for Vera Cruz. They all confirm circumstances attending removal of archives, money, valuables, code, from Consulate by Mexican officials. Have made strongest representations concerning release of Silliman and the restoration of code and other property of the United States. Have asked that Silliman be delivered to me and that he should be allowed to leave country under full protection.
