Consul Olivares to the Secretary of State.1
Managua, August 19, 1910.
States that Gen. Toledo, who commanded Madriz’s forces on the Tipitapa River, has arrived in Managua and reports that upon being attacked yesterday by the revolutionary forces his troops were seized with panic and fled. Says that some of the routed troops went to Granada and some have arrived in Managua, and that the entire invading army of the revolutionists is now on the Managua side of the Tipitapa. States that it is reported that houses in Granada were last night sacked by Madriz’s troops and that the city is now being attacked by the revolutionists. Reports that Madriz states it is his purpose to deposit the so-called presidency to-morrow in Jose Dolores Estrada, brother of Gen. Juan Estrada, who declares that he will turn the power over to the leaders of the revolution. Says that the family of Madriz has left Managua for Corinto and that Madriz is to follow to-morrow with the object of leaving Nicaragua. Says that Irias and family and Toledo are also preparing to leave the country to-morrow. Adds that Managua is in a turmoil of excitement and open hostility is being manifested toward Americans by Madriz’s followers, who roam the streets crying, “Death to the Yankees.” Says the legation and consulate buildings are under heavy police guard to-night and the general situation threatens to be serious during the next few days.
