The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Turkey (Steinhardt)

828. British Embassy here has informed Department that British Ambassador in Ankara has been instructed by the Foreign Office to discuss with Minister for Foreign Affairs matter of apparently impending Turkish agreement with the Germans for delivery of additional 135,000 tons of chrome contingently provided for under Clodius Agreement. Please consult with your British colleague and make such representations to the Turkish authorities, either independently [Page 1162] or jointly as may be agreed by both of you to be most effective. Telegraphic summary of present position would also be appreciated by Department. Chrome remains prime preemptive objective in Turkey.
