The Ambassador in Turkey (Steinhardt) to the Secretary of State

2048. An additional 15 of our interned aviators left Ankara yesterday with instructions to report to USAFIME in Cairo. With [Page 1077] their departure only seven of the total of 119 interned aviators remain in Turkey. Of these seven, two are still in the hospital and the services of four who are all enlisted men are being availed of by the Military Attaché of the Embassy to perform various essential functions for which other enlisted men would probably have to be sent to Ankara in the event of the departure of these men.
