In a friendly interview with the First Chief to-day he informed me that he was now in open rupture with Zapata and did not desire an interview with him. He stated that the two envoys imprisoned a week ago would continue prisoners and that he would imprison any other emissaries from Zapata who might enter this city. Under the circumstances, a conference with Zapata would not have the approval of Carranza and would therefore be futile. I believe an agreement could have been easily reached at one time had not Carranza persisted in his own efforts. Carothers thinks that Villa will not approve of armed conflict with Zapata.
