File No. 493.11/538.

The Chinese Minister to the Acting Secretary of State.

[Extract.]

My dear Mr. Lansing: You may be interested to know that the contemplated action of the American Government in returning to China the unused portion of the indemnity payments for the maintenance of the student movement between China and the United States has called forth expressions of gratitude from all quarters in Peking. I need hardly assure you that China will never forget this generous act of the American Government. The provisions thus made for the support of the Chinese students in this country are amply sufficient for the next two years.

With assurance [etc.]
