File No. 812.00/11487.
The Secretary of State to Chargé O’Shaughnessy.
Washington, April 11, 1914, 9 p.m.
741. Your No. 842, April 11, 1 p.m. I communicated Admiral Mayo’s ultimatum to the President and he approved demand made. My telegram 740 of April 10, 9 p.m., to you was in part expressed in the language of the President.
The statement by Huerta as quoted in your No. 841, April 10, 8 p.m., does not meet the last part of the demand and I notified Mr. Algara, the Mexican Chargé here, of this fact about noon to-day.
This Government appreciates, however, the difficulty of securing prompt action during the religious exercises connected with Holy Week and if General Huerta gives this as a reason for not having complied, this Government will direct Admiral Mayo to extend the time until Monday evening.
