File No. 365.117/27.

The Secretary of State to Ambassador Page.

No. 79.]

Sir: I enclose a copy of a letter1 from Mr. Redfield, Secretary of Commerce, communicating a copy of one received by him from the [Page 408] Bishop of Long Island regarding the Reverend Dominic Cassetta, a clergyman of Long Island, who, on his return to Italy on a visit, has been held to serve in the Italian Army.

In view of the fact that Mr. Cassetta came to the United States when of very tender years, that his father became a naturalized citizen, that Mr. Cassetta visited Italy for purposes of study, and in view of his religious calling, the Department thinks that you may make a special appeal to the Italian Government in his behalf, stating that this Government would much appreciate action on the part of the Italian authorities permitting Mr. Cassetta to return to the United States.

I am [etc.]
