The Secretary of State to the British Ambassador.
Washington, June 2, 1914.
Dear Mr. Ambassador: I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your note dated May 27, in regard to the protection of British life and property at Sanchez and vicinity, Dominican Republic.
In view of a cablegram received by this Department from the American Minister at Santo Domingo, stating that the British Chargé d’Affaires at that capital had requested that British interests at Sanchez be afforded protection, the Department of State took up the matter with the Navy Department, which issued instructions to the U. S. S. Castine to proceed from Puerto Plata to Sanchez for the purpose of giving adequate protection, in the event of necessity, to foreign lives and properties. The Castine arrived there May 22 and remained until May 29, reporting that everything at that place was quiet.
