Buenos Aires, August 14, 1914.
Sir: Referring to my telegram of August 9, with respect to the death of President Roque Saenz Peña early that day, I have the [Page 22] honor to report that Doctor Victorino de la Plaza, the Vice President, who has been acting as chief executive for the past eleven months, has thereby become President of the Argentine Republic for the remainder of the present term, which ends in 1916. Sehor Benito Villanueva, the Vice President of the Senate, is next in succession to the Presidency. * * *
The members of the Legation attended the funeral with the rest of the diplomatic body. The text of the telegrams of condolence from the President and Secretary of State were given publicity.
