Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of January 7, 1914,1 in which you state that the Norwegian Government has deemed it expedient to fix June 16, 1914, as the date for the opening of the Conference in relation to Spitzbergen and that your Government will be glad to receive the delegates of the Government of the United States at Christiania on that date.

In reply I have the honor to say that the Government of the United States expects to be represented at the conference by Mr. Schmedeman, the American Minister at Christiania. An additional delegate may also be designated to represent this Government.
