Sir: With reference to the general subject of assistance to Chinese in Mexico by American Consular officers, I have the honor to transmit herewith a list of the Chinese firms in Ensenada showing a close estimate of the present value of stocks of merchandise on hand expressed in Mexican currency.156

From this statement it will be noted that the Chinese have merchandise here to the value of about $100,000, American money. This estimate does not include cash on hand.

The general fear among local merchants that the Governor will soon commence making forced loans of money and supplies for the soldiers has led the Chinese merchants to make a formal request for the protection of this Consulate.
