File No. 312.62/94.
Vice Consul Bevan to the Secretary of State
Tampico, August 2, 1914, 9 p.m.
This afternoon German consular representative requested assistance of Admiral Mayo and of this office to prevent local authorities from boarding the steamship Antonina of Hamburg-American line in transit Europe and taking off Mexican accused of homicide. Captain believes that accusation is mere pretext and man is wanted on political charges and refused authorities permission to board ship. Authorities have placed a guard of soldiers on the wharf with artillery and machine guns threaten to sink ship if she attempts to leave the pier. This office has taken no action in the matter and will not unless directed by Department.
