File No. 312.41/99

Special Agent Carothers to the Secretary of State.

[Telegram.]

Resolutions adopted at mass meeting demanding investigation Benton matter. Have not received copy of proceedings but expect them early in morning. It appears to me that Benton went to Juarez seeking trouble. His cousin and business associate William Benton told me in Cobb’s presence that he had urged Benton not to go, that he would get into trouble, but he insisted stating he was going to tell him what he thought of him. He secured a card from Alfredo Farias which secured him admittance to Villa’s room. He at once commenced to rail at Villa and heated discussion resulted. Insults were passed by both, a struggle ensued but they were separated by Andres L. Farias. Villa ordered Benton taken to guardhouse. Some doubt exists as to after procedure and execution which will be explained in alleged military proceedings.
