File No. 312.52/290.
The Secretary of the Navy to the Secretary of State.120
Washington, May 21, 1914.
Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of May 19, enclosing a copy of a note from the Spanish Ambassador at this capital, in which he states that he is advised that the Spanish colony at the port of Guaymas, Mexico, is completely shut off from communication with the Spanish Minister at Mexico City, and the latter is apprehensive that the colony may be left without adequate protection if the town should be taken by the revolutionist party.
The request of the Department of State that orders be given to the Naval Commander in the waters about Guaymas to extend all practicable and proper protection to the Spanish subjects mentioned, in case necessity for such protection shall arise, is noted, and will be complied with.
It is also noted that the Consular Agent of the United States at Guaymas is now in the United States, and that there is at present no representative of the Department of State in Guaymas. Sincerely yours,
- Communicated to the Spanish Ambassador May 28, 1914.↩
