Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 18th instant, and take pleasure in herewith inclosing, for comparison [Page 68] of the English and Spanish texts, the protocol which I have caused to be prepared for our signatures and which stipulates for the payment of the sum to $3,500 in settlement of the claim of Patrick Shields for injuries done to him at Valparaiso in 1891.

I shall be prepared to sign with you this protocol, which has been engrossed in duplicate, on Monday next, the 24th instant, at 2.30 o’clock p.m., if you will have the kindness to call at that hour.
