Editorial Note

No official record of the substance of this conversation has been found. According to the account in Churchill, Hinge of Fate, p. 386, Elmer Davis raised the possibility that the Prime Minister might wish to cancel his projected visit to American army camps in South Carolina in view of the political situation in the United Kingdom resulting from the fall of Tobruk. Churchill indicated that he had no intention of cancelling his inspection trip. The President’s appointment calendar (Roosevelt Papers) does not list Davis as a participant at this luncheon. In information to the Historical Office Davis was able [Page 440] to recall nothing further than the fact that he had seen Churchill when the latter was in Washington in June 1942.
