Editorial Note

No official record of the substance of this conversation has been found. The information set forth above is derived from the President’s appointment calendar (Roosevelt Papers). Eisenhower’s own brief account (Dwight D. Eisenhower, Crusade in Europe (Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1948), p. 51) refers to this meeting as “no more than an informal chat” which had “no military significance”. Churchill, in his account in Hinge of Fate, pp. 384–385, recalls meeting alone with Eisenhower and Clark late on the afternoon of June 21, 1942. Churchill further recalls that in the course of the meeting, which lasted over an hour, he gave the American generals a copy of his memorandum of June 15, 1942, on Round-Up. Churchill’s memorandum is printed post, p. 455.
