Editorial Note

The only record of this meeting is contained in the following telegram from Marshall to McIntyre for Roosevelt, received at Hyde Park at about 12:30 p.m., June 19: “General Marshall states your guest just talked to him. He is pessimistic regarding Bolero and interested in August Gymnast and another similar movement in Norway.” (Roosevelt Papers) Stimson’s Diary for June 19, 1942, contains the following brief reference to the meeting: “Marshall told me that he had seen Churchill this morning up at the Embassy and that Churchill was full of discouragement and new proposals for diversions.”
