The Ambassador in France (Edge) to the Secretary of State
[Received April 18—9:40 a.m.]
180. Department’s 145, April 17, 5 p.m. A communiqué was issued by the Foreign Office last night at 8 o’clock to the effect that the French Government had recognized the Spanish Republic.
I have confirmed this this morning from the Foreign Office which states that the formal written reply to the note from the Spanish Chargé d’Affaires here (see my telegram number 173, April 17, 1 p.m.5) in which the latter had announced the establishment of the [Page 989] Provisional Government of the Republic in Spain, took note of this fact and added that the French Government accorded its recognition to the new Spanish Government.
