Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 20th ultimo in which you inform the Department that the National Constituent Assembly met on the 19th of June at Lisbon and adopted the republican form of government for Portugal.
In reply I have the honor to say that immediately after the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic official recognition of the new Government was made by the United States through its diplomatic representative in Lisbon.
