As the result of a Republican leader’s assassination certain Portuguese war vessels revolted early this morning and began bombarding city. The army returned fire. Disturbances also have taken place in the city. At the present moment the army controls city and remains loyal. No damage to American life and property reported or probable. Unable to communicate with the minister, who is in the country.
