File No. 24354/5.

The Secretary of State to the Costa Rican Minister.

No. 96.]

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 6th instant, in which you state that official cablegrams received by the Costa Rican Legation on the 5th instant convey the very sad information that the city of Catago was ruined by an earthquake on the night of the 4th and 5th instant; that there were many victims there, but none in any other place; and that the new building for the Central American court of justice was entirely destroyed.

The Government and people of the United States sympathize deeply with the Government and people of Costa Rica in the sorrow which this calamity has occasioned.

In compliance with your request this department has sent a copy of your note to Mr. Andrew Carnegie for his information.

Accept, etc.,

P. C. Knox.
