Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 10th instant, by which you communicate to the department your Government’s request to be informed of the number, names, and rank of the chiefs and of each commanding officer of the United States Naval Division which will visit Valparaiso to take part in the Chilean Centennial Celebration, and in which you quote your Government’s suggestion that the naval division arrive at Valparaiso not later than the 10th of next September.

In reply it affords me pleasure to say that I am advised by the Secretary of the Navy that the First Division of the United States Pacific Fleet will arrive at Valparaiso on September 10, 1910, agreeably to your Government’s desire. This division will consist of the four armored cruisers California (flagship), Washington, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, and will be under the command of the commander in chief of the United States Pacific Fleet, Rear Admiral Giles B. Harber, United States Navy.

The principal officers attached to the division will be: Rear Admiral Giles B. Harber, United States Navy, commander in chief, United States Pacific Fleet, commanding division; Capt. Henry T. Mayo, United States Navy, chief of staff; Lieut. Commander J. V. Chase, United States Navy, flag secretary; Lieut. Commander D. E. Theleen, United States Navy, fleet engineer; Lieut. L. R. Leahy, United States Navy, flag lieutenant; Lieut. D. B. Craig, United States Navy, aid; Capt. Henry T. Mayo, United States Navy, commanding United States ship California (flagship); Capt. Valentine S. Nelson, United States Navy, commanding united States ship Colorado; Capt. Charles F. Pond, United States Navy, commanding United States ship Pennsylvania; Capt. R. M. Hughes, United States Navy, commanding United States ship Washington.

The order of rank of the captains named above is as follows: 1, Capt. Henry T. Mayo, United States Navy; 2, Capt. Charles F. Pond, United States Navy; 3, Capt. Valentine S. Nelson, United States Navy; 4, Capt. Richard M. Hughes, United States Navy.
