Baron Fava to Mr. Hay.

Mr. Secretary of State: I did not fail to inform the minister of foreign affairs of Italy, by telegraph, of the sentiments expressed by the President in his message to Congress on account of the death of His Majesty King Humbert. * * *

The Marquis Visconti Venosta, in reply to my communication, instructs me to thank, in the name of the Royal Government, the President and his Government for this new evidence of sympathy given to Italy on the occasion of the serious misfortune which has befallen it, and I have the honor to beg your excellency to become the interpreter of this expression of thanks.

I tender you, Mr. Secretary of State, my thanks in advance, and reiterate, etc.,

Fava.
