Mr. Day to Sir Julian Pauncefote.

Dear Sir Julian: With reference to my note of the 6th instant, I deem it my duty to say that the Department has just received from Mr. Dudley, United States consul at Vancouver, another telegram in [Page 985] relation to the Spanish privateer referred to in his previous telegraphic message. Mr. Dudley states that the pilot who gave him the information on which that message was based now informs him that the privateer in question, with five guns, is at present between Queen Charlotte Sound and Dixon’s Entrance. Mr. Dudley is also advised that the Spanish consul at Vancouver is endeavoring to purchase or charter steamers. Under the circumstances it is reasonable to infer that any steamers so purchased or chartered will be used as privateers.

Believe me, etc.,

William R. Day.
