255. Editorial Note

On July 25, the Tunisian Constituent Assembly voted unanimously to abolish the monarchy and proclaim the establishment of a Republic with Habib Bourguiba as Chief of State. Ambassador Slim called upon Acting Secretary Herter on July 26 to inform the United States officially of the change and to request recognition of the new regime. (Note No. 843; Department of State, Central Files, 772.02/7–2657) As a consequence, on July 30, Ambassador Jones conveyed a message to Sadok Mokkadem, Tunisian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, noting that the United States would recognize the new status of the Tunisian Government.
