234. Editorial Note

On January 1, 1956, the United Kingdom and Egypt recognized the independence of the Sudan. United States recognition was extended effective on that date, although the message extending recognition was delayed in transmission and delivered by the Liaison Officer in Khartoum, Arthur E. Beach, on January 2. For text of the message, see American Foreign Policy: Current Documents, 1956, page 728. The Department of State announced on February 17 that the Liaison Office in Khartoum had been elevated to embassy status as of February 15, with Beach as Chargé d’Affaires. Lowell C. Pinkerton was appointed Ambassador on April 12 and presented his credentials on May 17.
