218. Editorial Note

On January 3, 1957, the National Security Council met to discuss, among other items, NSC 5617, a proposed revision of United States policy toward South Asia as set forth in NSC 5409. One of the key sections of this draft statement of policy concerned the United States military assistance program in Pakistan. For the memorandum of discussion at this meeting, see Document 4.

On January 10, President Eisenhower approved the statement of policy in NSC 5617, as amended and adopted by the National Security Council as NSC 5701; for text, see Document 5.
