Washington, October 2, 1944—6 p.m.

1045. ReEmbs 1457 [1437], September 1.⁴² Department is informed by Navy and War Departments that October 9 is satisfactory date to Commander, Panama Sea Frontier,⁴³ and to General Brett⁴⁴ for initiating staff conversations with Chile. Please ascertain from Chilean Government whether this date is satisfactory and if so make appropriate advance arrangements. On receipt of your telegraphic reply officers will be assigned by War and Navy Departments to begin the conversations.
