The Appointed Minister to Saudi Arabia (Eddy) to the Secretary of State
[Received 8 p.m.]
273. While Saudi Government should be informed without delay of increase in food subsidy (re Legation’s 270, September 8, 2 p.m. paragraph 1) this communication should be shortly followed by reply to King’s demand for return of 1943 pilgrimage revenues (re Legation’s 235, August 6, 10 a.m. paragraph 4). King expects full reply [Page 738] to that communication be made to both Governments. Hope Department can insist on reply by British. It concerns us because (1) affects Saudi finances and (2) demand addressed to US as well as British. Reply to King should be before Jordan leaves September 15 on 6-week vacation.
