The Ambassador in the United Kingdom (Winant) to the Secretary of State

3341. Deles No. 27. From the Under Secretary. During discussions on Saudi Arabia, Sir Maurice Peterson and Murray agreed British and American economic authorities in Cairo should explore possibility of joint Anglo-American goods subsidy program for Saudi Arabia being guided in principle by standard of 50–50 participation so far as this compatible with appropriate assignment of loading areas. If Department perceives no objection I suggest Landis be authorized to discuss the question in this sense with Jordan in reference to Cairo’s 995, April 22 [21], 2 p.m. repeating to Department Cairo’s 44 same date to London.

Sent to Department. Repeated to Jidda and to Cairo for Landis. [Stettinius.]
