The Chargé at Tangier ( Childs ) to the Secretary of State

132. Legation’s 120, May 16.72 Orgaz has now replied to Legation’s note of May 18 requesting expulsion of German agents from Spanish North Africa (see paragraph 6, section 1, Madrid’s 2430, May 473). He states he likewise is interested in execution of Madrid agreement and that necessary measures have been taken for departure from zone of Germans in question. He has ordered brief investigations of these [Page 548] individuals to “guarantee strict equity and justice.” As soon as necessary investigations are completed he will inform Legation of their departure dates and respective routes. Department should note that foregoing refers to German agents in Spanish Morocco and Tangier as distinguished from German consular personnel in Tangier. Arrangements for departure of last named are now in progress.
