The Consul General at Sydney (Moffat) to the Secretary of State

All tariff increases tabled May 22nd have been temporarily validated until December 1st. Meanwhile the Government has once again postponed the debate on its trade diversion program33 as it believes that within the next few days it will be able to announce a satisfactory settlement of its dispute with Japan.

  1. In his telegram of December 4, 1936, 9 a.m., the Consul at Sydney informed the Department that the Australian Government’s trade diversion policy had been passed through all stages by both Houses of Parliament (647.006/58).
