The Consul at Geneva (Everett) to the Secretary of State

[Received December 31—2:12 p.m.]
527. Department’s 162, December 30, 5 p.m.
- 1.
- Stoppani tells me that he is unable at the present time to give any more than a very general reply to the Department’s inquiry, pointing out that a decision in regard even to the setting up of the raw materials committee can be made only after the convening of the Council on January 18. He feels the probabilities are that the committee will be constituted at that time, the only difficulty so far as can be seen now being possible European developments affecting Germany.
- 2.
- Assuming the committee will be set up Stoppani is of the opinion that undoubtedly an effort will be made to coordinate the dates of its meetings with those of the Economic Committee by reason of their interlocking membership and common interest in subject matter. He can, however, give no assurance that such a procedure will prove possible.
- 3.
- According to present plans the committee on raw materials will probably hold its first session at the beginning of March. As regards [Page 485] frequency and duration of meetings Stoppani can only say that more than one session will be necessary and that each session will probably last nearly a week.
- 4.
- Stoppani stated incidentally he felt it would be advantageous to have the same American member on both committees.
- 5.
- In this connection he asked that I remind the Department of the situation with respect to the appointment of the American member of the Economic Committee which was discussed in Consulate’s telegram No. 478, November 24, 3 p.m.
