The Ambassador in Cuba (Guggenheim) to the Secretary of State
[Received April 10.]
Sir: Referring to my despatch No. 618 of March 31, 1931,16 I have the honor to report that the Military Court has exonerated Major Espinosa, President Machado’s former Aide de Camp, of all responsibility in connection with the placing of a bomb in the palace on February 23. The soldier Camilo Valdés, who admitted placing the bomb and whose confession implicated Espinosa and led to the latter’s indictment, has been condemned to death, but it is believed that his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment.
