The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Great Britain (Dawes)

Washington, October 27, 1931—5 p.m.

311. Your 421, October 26, noon. In lieu of clause suggested by Hejazi Minister you may agree to following clause which is substantially the same as that in the treaty between Great Britain and the Hejaz signed in Jeddah, May 20, 1927:¹⁷

“The English and the Arabic texts of the present agreement shall be of equal validity; but in case of divergence in the interpretation of any part of the agreement the English text shall prevail.”¹⁸
