Metropolitan Museum has communicated to Department texts of cables from Win lock25 reporting that British and French have made representations and that you have presented aide memoire to Egyptian Foreign Office.26

If you have taken reported action you should bear in mind, and if necessary you should orally make it clear to the Egyptian Foreign Office, that this Government hopes that reply to aide memoire may contain statement from Foreign Office that the Egyptian Government adheres to the principles set forth on page 7 of the Department’s draft note.27 See Paragraph 3–C of Department’s April 12, 6 p.m. Assurances from the ministry under which Lacau works would not be satisfactory.
