The Acting Secretary of the Treasury to the Secretary of State.
Washington, May 18, 1912.
Sir: I have the honor to refer to your letters of April 24 and May 4, 1912, relative to the request made by the President of Peru [etc.]
The Department is informed by the Surgeon General of the Public Health and Marine Hospital Service that Acting Assistant Surgeon G. M. Converse of that Service is professionally qualified for this duty, speaks the Spanish language, and is available for the said duty. Dr. Converse is willing to accept the position on the following terms:
- 1.
- His traveling expenses to and from Iquitos to be paid by the Peruvian Government.
- 2.
- His traveling expenses while engaged in this sanitary work to be paid by the Peruvian Government.
- 3.
- His compensation to be 100 pounds sterling a month.
- 4.
- The tenure of office to be fixed at no less than two years.
In the event that the Peruvian Government decides to accept the services of the above-mentioned officer this Department will grant him the necessary leave of absence.
