The Acting Secretary of State to the Secretary of the Treasury.¹

Sir: With reference to recent correspondence on the subject of an American sanitary expert for the sanitation of Iquitos, Peru, I have the honor to inform you that the Legation at Lima telegraphs under date of the 3d instant that the President of Peru confides in the good faith of any expert this Government might recommend as to the duration and terms of his employment, and that he authorizes the offer of a salary of seventy-five pounds sterling per month, or as much as one hundred pounds. The Legation adds that if this offer should be considered insufficient the President of Peru would consider a counter proposal.
