The Acting Secretary of State to the Minister of Nicaragua.
Washington, October 8, 1912.
Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 5th instant by which you convey in courteous and grateful terms, and by direction of your Government, the expression of its sympathy on account of the killing of four and the wounding of six marines of the United States in the discharge of their duty in Nicaragua, and inform me of the honors that your Government has directed on the occasion of the funeral of the men killed.
I beg you, Mr. Minister, to be so good as to inform your Government of this Government’s high appreciation of the friendly and sincere sentiments of your note.
While lamenting the circumstances of the death of these brave men, it is the hope and expectation of the Government of the United States that they will not have died in vain, but that from the sacrifice the people of Nicaragua will become united in striving only for that which is for the best good of the country and for the general happiness of the people.
