Sir: Referring to the embassy’s note of the 23d¹ ultimo, communicating to the Department the substance of an official report that persons on the American side of the Rio Grande fired on Mexican forces near Ciudad Juarez on February 7 last, I have the honor to inclose herewith a copy of a letter from the Department of Justice; to which a translation of the above-mentioned note was transmitted, stating that officers of that department will be instructed to make an investigation, and requesting more specific information regarding the matter.

It will afford this Department pleasure to transmit to the Department of Justice the information asked for. Accept, etc.
